At 4:24 a.m. AST on Tuesday, January 7, 2020, a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off southwestern Puerto Rico near Guayanilla and Indios, knocking out island-wide power and hitting Ponce among the hardest-hit municipalities. The Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, headquartered in Ponce with campuses in Mayagüez and Arecibo, suspended operations and mobilized structural engineers to inspect every building before reopening.
